About Netherwood Park Historical Society

Netherwood Park Historical Society operates as a nonprofit entity to educate the public about the unique history of the land use and development of subdivisions comprising 368 acres of land north and northeast of the University of New Mexico campus from the early 1910s that blossomed in post-World War II Albuquerque. Moreover, this history documents the lives of the fascinating people who made these developments possible.

The Historical Society supports scholarly pursuits, information dissemination, preservation of the built environment, as well as related advocacy for community leaders and policy makers.

The Lands of Netherwood Park history concerns those parcels within a large area comprised of the original U.S. Land Patents that Ada M. Cutler, Martha L. Taylor, and Harriet E. Jenness obtained in 1897. These Lands were later owned and platted by Ada and her husband Edwin Netherwood starting in 1913 and were subsequently completed by Ada’s surviving nephew, Edward R. Schell.

Kevin Murphy and his brother Kim Murphy have researched and authored the narrative of The Lands of Netherwood Park.  Images are used in accordance with “fair use terms” as we understand those terms.  Recopying or republishing these images may be restricted or prohibited.

We gratefully acknowledge the work of John Vittal and the cooperation of the staffs at the Center for Southwest Research at the University of New Mexico and the Bernalillo County Clerk’s Office.
